Sophomore forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) recorded his second double-double in the last three games as the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team beat Oakton 81-76 on Saturday in the Waubonsee Classic.
Robinson scored 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added a game- and season-high 11 rebounds as the Chargers (3-2) bounced back from a heartbreaking loss Friday night to Waubonsee.
Freshman Elias Akale (Ashdad, Israel/Mekif Tet) scored 19 points and handed out six of Sandburg’s 26 assists to pace the Chargers’ offense against Oakton. Freshman guard Kellian Thomas (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) chipped in 11 points and had a team-best three steals for the Chargers, who shot 51 percent (30 of 51) from the floor.
The Owls’ Jordan Irving led all scorers with 35 points, highlighted by a 9-for-13 performance from 3-point range.
The Chargers, who had a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint, led 37-26 at halftime and saw their lead grow to 19 midway through the second half.
Sandburg suffered an 89-86 loss Friday at Waubonsee as the Chiefs’ Cory Adams hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. That spoiled a monster game for Chargers freshman Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East), who scored 32 points and had seven assists. Robinson added 22 points in a losing cause.
The Chargers will host Milwaukee Area Technical at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the back end of a men’s-women’s doubleheader.
